Molino Real was established in 1995, as part of Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzika's project to re-discover the lost regions of Spain. Located between the mountains of Granada and the Mediterranean, Málaga produces one of the purest Muscats in the world.
-
'The decadent and rich 'Mountain wines', made from sun-dried Moscatel grapes, had fallen out of fashion, and the wine-growing traditions of Málaga were close to disappearing.
-
Telmo and Pablo own 9 hectares of Moscatel vines, as well as working with like-minded growers, and are on a mission to inspire the next generation. These vineyards had survived thanks to the tradition of raisin production in the area, with the the `Molino Real` team using raisin dryers to dry the grapes.
-
'Mountain Blanco' grapes are sourced from vineyards grown between 550-1,00 metres above sea level (some of the highest elevations in the eastern Zona Azarquía area of Málaga) and are pressed using traditional 'esparto' mats, before being crushed in an olive-oil press.
-
The duo firmly believe that both the sweet and dry wines exemplify the history of Spanish wine, with Telmo suggesting that the wines are: 'Quite decadent [in a state of decline] but with an amazing future if the new generation is able to restore and give light to some of the most amazing terroir of the old world... We are proud to have been investing our energy in an impossible wine, we never did great business, we lost money but it is one of the wines we are most proud of.'
