The Special Edition Pinot Noir offers delicate perfumes of red and black cherry fruit, violets, spice and dried herbs. On the palate it is lush and supple, with flavours of rich red fruits, leather and tobacco. The tannins are silky and fine grained, balanced with a fresh, vibrant acidity and lifted finish.

The Pinot Noir is grown in the Terraces Vineyards in Felton Road (Bannockburn). The vineyard is composed of predominantly Dijon clone vines. The team at Wild Earth have selected Clones five and 115 to produce the first Special Edition Pinot Noir.

The growing season started off well with good soil moisture left over from winter. A cool start to October stalled growth, but welcome rainfall coupled with sunshine in November helped to remedy the delay. Consistently warm temperatures during flowering and fruit set in Spring made for an excellent start to crop growth. Late in December the temperatures cooled down for about six weeks until the end of January. The season picked up some heat in the latter part of summer with a warmer and drier than average autumn, meaning that harvest was earlier than usual.

The Pinot Noir was hand harvested towards the end of March 2014. The fruit was destemmed into stainless steel tanks before being inoculated with selected wine yeasts to carry out the fermentation. The wine was aged in 25% new French oak barriques for approximately seven months before it was ready to be bottled.

Wild Earth founder Quintin Quider is an expatriate Californian who has spent many years living on the South Island. He has gathered a small, dedicated team to produce his Wild Earth range in Central Otago. Established in 1998, Wild Earth Wines owns 35 hectares of vineyards in two of the region's finest locations - at the end of Felton Road overlooking the Kawarau River and in the North Lowburn district beneath the imposing Pisa Range.
