Studies have shown that drinking a glass of red wine a day can reduce the chances of getting a cold by 60% (don't ask me which studies, I read it once, that was enough for me...) in addition to that everybody knows a big old sniff of the strong stuff always helps to clear the sinuses!
So here are a few ideas to see you through the the months of wintery cold.
The Classic Hot Toddy
Everyone has their own perfected ways for this, here ours:
- 50ml Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Heavily Peated Scottish Barley Whisky
- 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon of Manuka Honey
- 50ml hot (not boiling) water
I chose this whisky in particular as the peatiness really draws out any feeling of blockage in your face. Honestly, it will knock out that cold, but it also shows an elegance and delicacy that wont offend your senses. A really beautiful balance to nurse you through troubling sniffles.
I also love using Manuka, it reminds me of my grandmother, any ailments I ever had ever from a grazed knee to a migraine could be cured with a spoonful of Manuka Honey according to Granny Browne, and aren't grandparents supposed to be comforting. On top of that it tastes fabulous!
Sailor's Winter Warmer
I actually drink a similar version of this cold but with an added flourish it makes for a perfect winter drink:
- 50ml Sailor Jerry's Spiced Rum
- 150ml Crabbies Ginger Beer warmed over a gentle heat (not boiling)
- A star of anise
- A cinnamon stick
- Orange zest
This recipe is so simple yet so tasty, the rum does all the work when it comes to sweet flavouring where the anise, ginger and orange zest balance it out to not be too overpowering. Scrumptiously soothing!
What? That's not right! - Trust me, it's like a herbal tea with alcohol and it's great.
- 1 bottle of Louis Jadot Chardonnay - Aligoté
- 1/2 a bottle of Rekorderlig Apple Cider
- 75ml Elderflower Cordial
- Zest of a lemon
- A vanilla pod (or a couple of drops of vanilla essence)
- 1 tablespoon of caster sugar
Warm the whole lot on a low heat till hot - not boiling - garnish with a lemon wedge and enjoy!
Everyone has their own mulled red recipe, I'm not here to say mine is better, I'm just here to remind you what you can do with it:
- bottle of Louis Jadot Gamay - Pinot Noir
- 200ml fresh orange juice
- 5 or so cloves
- a cinnamon stick
- a heaped tablespoon of brown sugar
This is a very basic recipe, add and take away to taste, personally I like to throw a shot of Sipsmith Slow Gin or Damson Vodka into my glass!
BOTH LOUIS JADOT WINES ARE NOW AT THE LOW PRICE OF £9 IN STORE!

Chase Smoked Bloody Mary
Chase Distillery take all the credit for this recipe with their gorgeous smoked vodka, but a nice spicy bloody mary always makes me feel like I'm being slightly healthier... it's the tomato juice right?
- 50ml Chase Smoked Vodka
- 20ml Freshly squeezed lemon juice
- Dash Tabasco sauce
- Dash Worcestershire sauce
- Tomato Juice
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into an ice filled highball glass. Garnish with a stick of celery, lemon wedge, an olive and a grind of black pepper.
And there you have it!
All the recipes to beat the January blues.
Don't forget we have some fanatstic January deals on in store at the moment, so pop in and say hi.
We'd love to hear you winter warmer recipes too!
HAPPY NEW YEAR from the team @ North & South Wines
How the Japanese love to Miniaturise everything they touch, a tradition stretching back centuries.
We at North and South Wines were really surprised when they applied it to one of our favourite drops, and we are not talking about irrigating your Bonsai ! Nope it's been applied to the size of select Japanese Whiskey Hibiki 12 ! has gone all miniature on us.
The reason behind this is one (oh master distiller) of simple economics. Way way back in the early naughties and even further a millennium ago, the distillers in Japan started making age statements of 12, 18, etc however they just didn't make enough barrels, so for now there is a shortfall, with rationing and portion control, so now you can go out and get a 50cl bottle , which is closer to a half than a full one, except at North and South Wines, where we don't do things by halves, go for the full size only at North and South.
Check out our Yamazaki 18 and Hibiki 17 truly rare items.

Hallowe'en is fast approaching and what better way to enjoy the evening than some beastly booze...
Innocent Bystander - Pinot Gris
I know he's innocent but there's something I don't trust about this guy... he's an eerie little fella.
About the wine: A superbly quaffable wine. Pear, lemon and thyme on the nose. A really lively palate with a solid flick of crisp citrus. Lemon sorbet and lime flowers, this wine is tight but with a melting acidity that lingers like fresh lemonade.
We also stock their Chardonnay, Syrah & Pinot Noir.
Gnarly Head - Old Vine Zinfandel
Rich, dark berry flavors with layers of spice, plum, pepper and vanilla.
The gnarly story: The Zinfandel vines planted in these older vineyards are some of the oldest in California and are grown in the traditional freestanding “head-trained” way. These gnarled vines provide the inspiration for Gnarly Head as the wines these older vines create are bold, full-bodied, juicy and in other words, gnarly.
The Wolftrap - Rose
No evidence of wolves has ever been discovered in the Franschhoek valley except for one lone mysterious wolf trap...
About the wine: The nose is delicate and elegant with Turkish delight and rose petals in abundance, as well as attractive red cherry, candyfloss and pomegranate fruit. A juicy palate with the cherry and red berries following through from the nose, with integrated natural acidity. The wine ends clean and fresh.
We also stock their Syrah/Mouverdre/Viognier & Viognier/Chenin Blanc/Grenache Blanc.
Bats Blood - Merlot
This legendary wine is grown, produced and bottled on The Master’s estate in the historic region of Transylvania close to the foothills of the Carpathian mountains...
About the wine: A single grape Merlot that is so velvety smooth and fruity that it becomes incredibly moreish (like blood to a vampire...).
The Kraken Rum is an imported rum from the Caribbean blended with 13 secret spices, it is strong, rich, black and smooth.
The legend: It is said that a ship carrying one of the largest quantities of black spiced rum ever to be brought over from the Caribbean islands, for unexplained reasons, never reached its destination. Barrels carrying this black spiced rum drifted off the ship into the sea and the rum was renamed after the Kraken as a tribute (some say as a “sacrifice”) to this beast. Most who encounter the Kraken do not live to tell the tale...
Crystal Head Vodka & Cocktail Shaker
Nothing is more marvelously morbid than the reminder of one's own mortality, the human crystal head skull is a must have feature for any Hallowe'en party worth a visit. If you fancy yourself a mixologist don't miss the limited edition crystal head cocktail shaker currently in store.
About the vodka: The liquid is filtered seven times, of which three are through layers of semi precious crystals known as Herkimer diamonds creating an incredibly clean tasting smooth vodka.
Harviestoun's Bitter & Twisted - Golden Ale
That sneaky little devil field mouse will make sure your Hallowe'en will be plenty twisted...
About the beer: Bitter & Twisted is a superbly-balanced, refreshingly-lively beer. It has a malty-sweet aroma with a floral, fruity hoppiness and a zingy, zesty flavour. Complex, rounded, sweet and dry.
Beavertown's Neck Oil - Session IPA
This is an everyday, easy drinking IPA. Light, crisp and punchy.
Fun fact: The skulls on the front of the can are the crew that first canned it. The people that made it happen!
Brew Dog's Pumpkin King - Pumpkin Ale
The king of all pumpkins, this guy will carve your night out right...
About the beer: Spicy and sweet autumnal favourites like toasted marshmallow and toffee apple are just some of the complex notes you’ll find in this twisted take on a pumpkin ale.
So when it comes to hallowe'en we've pretty much got you covered wouldn't you say?
We look forward to trick or treating you to some delectable delights!
Well, well, well... look who's back in town!

Everyone is losing their heads over this super smooth quadruple distilled vodka, and who can blame em'?
As the brain child of Ghostbusters creator Dan Akroyd and artist John Alexander (who's work proves his strong influence on the design!) this mighty skull simply oozes with cool. So cool the Rolling Stones announced it as their official 50th anniversary vodka.
Crystal Head is additive free - no glycol, citrus oils or added sugars.
It is distilled 4 times, filtered 7 times, 3 times of which are through Herkimer diamonds.
High quality Canadian peaches 'n' cream corn is used which makes this vodka gluten free.
The fun stuff:
One of the best things I have found with this vodka is, once all the yummy insides are gone there's so much you can do with the bottle! So I thought I'd share a few ideas with you.
These made over versions can be found in local bar Project Orange where they have flavoured each of their vodkas with different themes matching their bottles (elderflower, chili raspberry, cucumber and watermelon)
You could also mix in some syrups without painting the outside to give the skulls some colour.
Channel your inner Damien Hirst and bejewel your Crystal Head!
Throw in some LEDs as a hassle free alternative to a pumpkin (and a pretty fabulous centre piece all year round! (another great thing you could do with lights is simply stick a long wick candle, I would personally opt for red, and let the wax drip over the contours! Very atmospheric...)
All in all I think it's safe to say there's a lot to be done with these fantastic heads, but don't forget, it's not just the novelty of the bottle that you're getting, the vodka is absolutely stunning too! Smoothest of smooth, can absolutely drink on the rocks, in its purest form.
So I will leave you with the final cherry on top of the skull shaped pie: North & South Wines are offering you this quirky little piece at the low low cost of just £35.99 or £79.99 for a magnum!
This is most definitely something not to be missed!
